Not surprising, the first name of the community was “Stumptown.” In 1825 Stumptown became Fullwood after the stagecoach Inn operator and Postmaster, John Fullwood. Finally Matthews became Matthews in 1874 being named after Mr. Watson Matthews, a director of the railroad. The town was incorporated in 1880 with the population at 191.
