As Matthews moves into the second century of her dubious beginnings, she originally was a small cotton farming community in the 1800’s. The cotton farmers literally cleared the land for cotton planting thus leaving stumps in every direction. Not surprising, the first name of the community was “Stumptown.” In 1825 Stumptown became Fullwood after the stagecoach Inn operator and Postmaster, John Fullwood. Finally Matthews became Matthews in 1874 being named after Mr. Watson Matthews, a director of the railroad. The town was incorporated in 1880 with the population at 191.

Mecklenburg County approximately 10 miles outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.
